Back in March 2020, when the Philippine government announced a nationwide lockdown in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the airline industry is one of the areas that were greatly affected. Because of flight suspensions, some decided to find other sources of living just to make ends meet while many unfortunately lost their jobs.
This time, it was Jen Barangan’s turn to share the sad news with her followers. To those who may be unaware, Jen is that viral girl from Tiktok videos about ‘Flight Attendant Challenges’ that not just became a hit on the said video platform but even in other social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
However, Jen is deeply saddened to share a vlog on her Youtube channel entitled “I Lost My Job as a Flight Attendant”. Jen describes the said video as one of the hardest vlogs she has ever filmed as she simply loves her job so much and it means a lot to her especially with the fact that she is the breadwinner of her family.
She shared a timeline of how events were for her since the pandemic started in the country. She had her last flight to Cebu back on March 16, 2020, where she had no choice but to isolate herself for 14 days and stay away from her family.
Since the start of the lockdowns, rumors were already circulating in their company about the possible retrenchment of some employees. In June, Jen was shocked to receive an e-mail about the possible termination of her job, she was not supposed to receive such mail that her supervisor even called her and said that she should not tell anyone about it.
Later on in that month, they were called to be stationed back in Manila when several flights were scheduled to operate. Then, the news on the retrenchments came and as for Jen’s batch, they were not included in the said retrenchments. She was happy that she can still continue doing the job that she loves.
Not until September came that rumors about the second round of retrenchment spread and Jen was just too sure that this time, she will be part of the retrenched employees. Her hunch turned out to be true as the airline she works in sent an e-mail to her that her last day of working as a flight attendant will be on October 16, 2020 – the exact day that she posted her vlog about losing her job.
Before her emotional vlog ended, Jen left a meaningful message to all her subscribers which said, “It might be the end of my time with Cebu Pacific, but it doesn’t mean it can’t be the start of yours. When this pandemic ends, and we are all clear to travel again. The skies will need you, and it is now your turn to follow your dreams.”
