Sometimes, we may stumble across unexpected stuff that will leave us speechless and no longer know what to do next. In the case of two teenagers from Israel, they were very shocked when they stumbled upon a rare treasure.
According to CNN, the two were taking part in pre-military national service when they stumbled upon an old jar. Initially, they thought that very thin leaves were the contents of the jar.
Oz Cohen, one of the teenagers who found the coins shared that while he was doing some soil excavation, that hard jar caught his attention so he kept digging the ground. Then, when he was that gold coins were the contents of the jar, he felt really excited to have found such a special and ancient treasure.
Representatives from the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) were then sent to examine the rare treasure that was found. The coins — 425 in all — were made of pure 24-karat gold and weighed 845 grams.
Robert Kool, a coin expert with the IAA, revealed that the coins date back to the end of the 9th century. The IAA also revealed that the coins are made of pure gold that does not oxidize in the air which was why they were found in excellent condition, as if buried they are buried only the day before.
They also added that whoever buried the treasure 1,100 years ago must have planned to retrieve it that they even secured the jar with a nail so that it will stay in its place. Well, no one knows now why they weren’t able to retrieve the treasure.
Finding such a large cache of gold coins is exceedingly rare, said the directors of the excavation site, since gold was often melted down and reused by later civilizations.
