Polar Bears forced to eat their own cub because of climate change

The world is changing and these changes are most evident in the polar regions of the planet. The once covered with ice areas are now slowly melting and the animals naturally living in these areas are trying their best to cope with the situation – even if that means eating their own kind.

Sad and tragic as it may seem but that is the current situation Polar Bears are in now. According to India Times, normally they hunt on sea ice, feasting on seals. But with ice melting away, the bears are forced to be near the shore where they cannot hunt the usual way.

According to Daily Mail, their dwindling food sources are being blamed on the climate crisis, as ice levels in the Arctic have decreased at least by 40 percent over the last 25 years.

While it was previously revealed that Polar Bears have natural cannibalism tendencies, they never exercised this as their natural habitat provides them with enough food to get by day by day.

Additionally, according to Mirror UK, polar bear expert Ilya Mordvintsev explains that Cases of cannibalism among polar bears are a long-established fact, but scientists are now worried because such cases used to be found rarely while now they are recorded quite often.

What contributed greatly to this changed behavior of the Polar Bears is the change in the habitat which was caused by excessive human intervention. In fact, an area from the Gulf of Ob to the Barents Sea, where polar bears used to hunt, is now a busy route for ships carrying LNG (liquefied natural gas).

What’s more alarming is that Russians living in Arctic settlements have made several reports of bears entering areas of human habitation, particularly to raid rubbish dumps for food.

If this isn’t a call for change for all human beings out there then, what else do we need?
